When working with children who have challenges:

• Help them sharpen critical thinking skills, with strategies and altered attitudes necessary for independent learning

• Recognize that the window of opportunity is not on learning potential, it’s on the desire to be a learner

• Understand that the medical model doesn't define the disability, it is how it personally impacts a specific life.

• Listen to a student’s perceptions of his/her challenges and find the tools and strategies to empower him/her

• Master your tools so that they work for you—they don’t “fix” the child, your intervention with them matters far more
